Shunryu Suzuki arrived in San Francisco in 1958 and established Zen
practice in the region through centers in San Francisco, Berkeley, Sonoma and Tassajara,
the first Soto Zen training monastery in the West. A recent book, "Crooked
Cucumber", relates his life and teachings. Suzuki Roshi started Haiku Zendo in 1986, later to become Kannon Do. His lectures at Haiku Zendo have been recorded in a book, "Zen mind, beginner's mind", which has been translated in many languages. |

Les Kaye practiced first at Haiku Zendo, was ordained monk by Suzuki Roshi and became the spiritual leader of Kannon Do in 19821. Les has been recognized in 1986 as Zen master and successor in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki. |
